Coral Reef with a variety of marine life - Great Barrier Reef

GREAT BARRIER REEF of Australia

The Great Barrier Reef is the worlds largest coral reef being over 2000km long stretching along the East Coast of Queensland in Australia from just north of Bundaberg to the tip of the Cape York Peninsula.

The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park was established in 1975 and is the worlds largest marine protected area. In 1981 this unique area of tropical water received its World Heritage Listing and is carefully managed today by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority.

The Great Barrier Reef is made up of nearly 2900 individual reefs very close together which include 760 fringing reefs and 300 coral cays. The reef supports a diverse range of soft corals, sponges, molluscs, anemones, reptiles, marine mammals and sea birds; not to mention 2000 species of fish and 500 species of hard coral.

Snorkelling the Great Barrier Reef Australia

This ‘eighth' natural wonder of the world is a brightly coloured kaleidoscope of hundreds of different corals. They live in harmony and combine with a myriad of sea creatures that have developed amazing roles and relationships in adapting to this unique coral reef habitat. The reef is also a breeding area for a number of rare and endangered species. Humpback whales come from the Antarctic to give birth to their young in these waters.

With new fish species found in the Great Barrier area every year, the total is approaching 2,000. It will likely keep rising. So will the estimates of 4,000 mollusks and at least 350 hard, or reef-building, corals. Researchers counted more than 250 types of shrimps on the reefs just around Heron Island, near the Great Barrier’s southern end. (numbers - courtesy National Geographic)

Australia's government is doing a remarkable job to preserve the Great Barrier Reef and is striving to continue on. You can experience this underwater Eden by:

Taking a leisurely sail or cruise out to Low Isles for snorkelling off the beach

Cruising to the outer reefs to dive at some of the most beautiful coral reefs and explore this incredible underwater world of unique fish and coral species.

Flying in a helicopter to one of the sand cays in the middle of the Great Barrier Reef to enjoy a most private and leisurely breakfast and walk along the waters with no other people there than your own party

Snorkelling above the reef and see the vivid display or coral and fish in the turquoise waters.
